How did Ford’s best-selling sedan, the Ford Taurus come to be? In the early 1980s, the Ford Motor Company hired renowned statistician William Edwards Deming to set a new paradigm anchored on “Quality is Job 1”. This was during a time when the company had incurred $3 billion in losses and was on the brink of bankruptcy. The new quality-focused approach at Ford led them to use statistical process control in design and manufacturing. And this new approach ultimately resulted in the birth of the Ford Taurus.
As America’s best-selling car from 1992 to 1996, the Ford Taurus was a common sight on every street in the 1990s. Over 7.5 million units of the Ford Taurus were produced, cementing the notion that it was for a time the family car of choice for Americans. Although production of the Ford Taurus continues for other markets, the last the US market saw of the Taurus was for the 2019 model year, after Ford decided to axe it along with the Fiesta, Fusion, and Focus. The 2019 Ford Taurus was available in SE, SEL, and Limited trims, with options for either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). It was equipped with a standard 288-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine. And with the base trim, standard features included carpet front and rear floor mats, a 4.2-inch LCD entertainment system with six speakers, three 12-volt DC outlets, manual air-conditioning with underseat and console ducts, and chrome interior accents.
Does the Ford Taurus Have Good Gas Mileage?
The 2019 Ford Taurus SE is rated for 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. These are solid numbers for a full-size sedan. The higher-powered Ford Taurus SHO with its 365-hp engine isn’t bad also, getting 16 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.
Did the Taurus Save Ford?
In Eric Taub’s book, “Taurus: The Making of the Car that Saved Ford”, Taub writes about the leadup to the development of the Ford Taurus. On the edge of financial demise, Ford sold the Taurus in record numbers, selling over a million in four years and becoming the best-selling nameplate in the United States in the early 1990s.
