The Mercury Cougar is the Mercury brand's most distinctive model, featuring cat’s eye headlamps and an audacious exterior design. It was first produced in 1967, becoming the second longest-in-production Mercury model, behind only the Grand Marquis. The Cougar has been produced as a coupe, convertible, sedan, station wagon, and a hatchback over its run that spans eight generations. Over 2.9 million Mercury Cougars have been sold all time, making it one of the Mercury brand’s greatest selling vehicles.

The 2002 Mercury Cougar was the last of its kind. Marketed as a two-door hatchback, it was offered in four trim levels: base, Sport, Sport Premium, and Sport Ultimate. The base engine was a 2.0-liter inline-four that produces 125 hp and 130 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, optional was a 2.5-liter V6 engine that produces 170 hp and 165 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission were both standard, with a four-speed automatic as optional. Standard features included power steering, cruise control, remote trunk release, air-conditioning with rear ventilation ducts, and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel. Upgrading to the Sport package adds front and rear cupholders, a leather steering wheel, and an easier rear entry.

Is the Mercury Cougar the Same As a Mustang?

For the first generation of the Mercury Cougar, it shared engines with the Ford Mustang. However, the Cougar was heavier and better equipped than the Mustang, and also more expensive. And while the 1967 to 1970 models of the Cougar were highly based on the Mustang, the Cougar would be based on various platforms in future releases.
