The Lincoln Navigator is a full-size luxury SUV sold by Ford’s luxury division, Lincoln. The Navigator started with the 1998 model year as a luxury counterpart to the Ford Expedition. It was Ford’s first full-size SUV under either the Lincoln or Mercury marque, larger than the Mercury Mountaineer by over 700 pounds. Sales of the Navigator were crucial for the Lincoln brand to outsell its rival Cadillac in 1998.

The Navigator was introduced in 1998 with Ford’s 5.4-liter Triton V8 engine which produced 230 hp. It had a towing capacity of 6,600 pounds, surpassing that of the 1999 Cadillac Escalade’s 5,000 pounds. While the Navigator looked like the Expedition from the outside, it offered distinct inclusions. One feature was a power-adjustable pedal, which was the first of its kind for a luxury SUV. Other unique features included cruise controls on the steering wheel and rear seat radio.

The 2024 Lincoln Navigator comes with a price tag of almost $30,000 more than its Expedition relative. The engine is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, outputting 440 hp and 510 pound-feet of torque. Towing capacity sits at 6,200 pounds for the base trim but goes all the way to 8,300 pounds with the highest trim. Gas mileage is a solid 22 mpg highway, much improved from the 1998 model’s 16 mpg. The 2024 Lincoln Navigator is offered in three trims, namely Premiere, Reserve, and the six-figure-priced Black Label.
