The Ford Flex is a full-size crossover SUV marketed by Ford from the 2009 through 2019 model years. It succeeded the Ford Taurus X. The Ford Flex debuted for the 2009 model year with a style that was designed by renowned Volvo designer Peter Horbury. The Flex featured an aesthetic paying homage to woodies, with its horizontal grooves in the doors and tailgate. In 2013, it had a mid-cycle facelift with the model name spelled out on the hood above a newly styled grille, an updated dashboard, and a three-spoke steering wheel with main gear selection buttons. The Ford Flex was sold under a single generation in its decade-long run, with annual US sales that ranged from 19,000 to 38,000 units.
The 2019 Ford Flex is the model’s final iteration. Both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations were offered, with trims that included SE, SEL, Limited, and Limited EcoBoost. Two V6 engine options were available, with the more powerful twin-turbo option standard on the Limited EcoBoost trim. The base 3.5-liter V6 engine produces a solid 287 hp and 254 pound-feet of torque, allowing the SUV to tow 2,000 pounds. The premium powertrain is far sportier with an output of 365 hp and 350 pound-feet of torque. But it posts relatively low EPA numbers at 17 mpg combined, 15 mpg city, and 21 mpg highway.
What Frame Is the Ford Flex Built On?
The Ford Flex is based on the Ford D4 chassis architecture, which is a flexible wheelbase variant of the Ford D3 platform. Other models built on the D4 platform include the Ford Explorer and the Lincoln MKT. Distinctive exterior features of the 2019 Ford Flex Limited EcoBoost include the following:
