In the early 1980s, with the Ford Motor Company’s push to produce a small, sporty, and fuel-efficient car that was affordable, it produced the Ford EXP. Based on the Ford Escort, the EXP became a two-seater sports compact with increased cargo space on the back from reconfiguring the rear seats. The acronym stands for “Erika Project Personal”, with Erika being the codename for the Ford Escort in Europe, and X denoting a project car.
The Ford EXP was produced from 1982 to 1988 in two generations. The 1988 Ford EXP was a lightweight hatchback, weighing at just under 2,300 pounds. It was powered by a 1.9-liter inline-four engine that produces 90 hp and 106 pound-feet of torque. Officially named the Ford Escort EXP, it shared flush-mounted headlights with the Ford Escort but was given a unique bumper with an integrated air dam. The EXP also came with a special grille, distinguished by a single slot below the Ford Emblem. From 1986 to 1988, the EXP was offered either as the Luxury Coupe or the Sport Coupe. The Sport Coupe was powered by a sportier 115-hp engine with multiport fuel injection.
What Happened to the Ford EXP?
After the production of about 225,000 units of the Ford EXP, Ford decided to discontinue the sports compact after the 1988 model year. This was during a time when Ford was selling two other two-door compact sport coupes, namely the Ford Festiva and the Ford Tempo. With the market overlap, it made sense to stop sales of the Ford EXP, releasing a front-wheel drive version of the Mustang instead, called the Ford Probe.
