The Ford Excursion is a full-size, heavy-duty SUV that had a short run of six years. It was Ford’s largest and longest SUV to enter production, and one of the biggest SUVs ever produced. Intended to compete with the outsized Chevrolet Suburban, the Excursion was derived from the F-250 Super Duty truck. It used a heavier-duty chassis and frame than Ford’s other mammoth SUV, the Expedition. Although the Excursion was able to meet projected sales initially, demand dropped due to the energy crisis in the early 2000s. Ford discontinued its production in 2005.

The last US release of the Ford Excursion was for the 2005 model year. A wide range of variants were offered, with both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) configurations available. Trim levels included the XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. Multiple powertrain options were also available, which included a 5.4-liter V8, 6.8-liter V10, and a 6.0-liter V8 turbodiesel. The base V8 engine produced 255 hp and 350 pound-feet of torque, enabling the SUV to tow as much as 7,600 pounds. Max payload was rated at 1,920 pounds, which isn’t surprising for a nine-seater.
